Looking for a rewarding loop hike in East Honolulu with stunning summit views of the Koʻolau Range? The Hahaione to Kuliouou Loop offers an excellent workout, taking hikers up Mauna ʻO Ahi ridge to the Koʻolau summit and back down through Kuliouou Valley.
Hike Overview & Route Specs
- Location: Hawaii Kai / East Oahu, Hawaii
- Trailhead: End of Hahaione Road
- Route Type: Loop ("Tadpole" configuration)
- Key Landmarks: Mauna ʻO Ahi Ridge, Koʻolau Summit, Kuliouou Ridge Trail, Kuliouou Picnic Shelter
Trail Report: Climbing Mauna ʻO Ahi Ridge
My wife and I started our hike just before 1:00 PM, parking at the end of Hahaione Road. The trailhead begins right at the street's end, leading through lush (though occasionally overgrown) forest.
The trail quickly switchbacks up to gain the crest of Mauna ʻO Ahi ridge—a short 15-minute push. From there, the route follows a "tadpole" loop structure: ascending the ridge tail, completing the loop along the summit, and returning down the same initial trail.
The climb along Mauna ʻO Ahi ridge toward the Koʻolau Summit is steady and steep in sections. Near the summit, cleared sections along the ridge offer views near the nearby power lines and HECO clearing areas.
Traversing the Koʻolau Summit to Kuliouou
Reaching the summit after roughly an hour, the trail connects with the Hahaione-Windward Ridge junction, opening up dramatic drop-offs to the windward side and panoramic views looking down into Waimanalo.
Heading bound toward Kuliouou along the summit ridge, the trail passes three prominent high-voltage powerline poles before connecting with the top of the Kuliouou Ridge Trail.
Descending Kuliouou Trail & Valley Return
From the Kuliouou summit, the descent follows the main Kuliouou trail down past the rest stop and picnic shelter. To complete the loop back into Hahaione Valley:
- Descend Kuliouou Ridge to the junction with the graded old jeep road.
- Follow the jeep road down into the valley east of Kuliouou.
- Climb back out of the valley floor to reconnect with the crest of Mauna ʻO Ahi Ridge.
- Follow the initial trail back down to the Hahaione Road trailhead.
Tips for Hiking the Hahaione-Kuliouou Loop
- Hydration: Bring plenty of fluids (at least 2–3 liters per person) as the exposed ridge climbs can get hot.
- Footing & Safety: Exercise extreme caution along the Koʻolau summit trail due to narrow ridges and steep windward drop-offs.
- Parking: Park responsibly at the dead end of Hahaione Road without blocking neighborhood driveways.
