Goats in the mountains above Waimanalo
Yesterday I was up on the KST section from Makapuʻu to TomTom and ran into something I thought you might find interesting. Shortly after the puka, I looked up and saw what appeared to be about 80–100 goats. It was truly a sight to behold.
At first, from a distance, I thought I saw the outline of a goat, but having never seen one on Oʻahu, I dismissed the idea as just another summit-trail hallucination. As I got closer, I realized they were indeed goats, though initially I thought there were only 8–10 of them.
When I finally got as close as they would allow, I noticed them littered everywhere: brown, black, white; huge horns, small horns, and some with no horns at all. I was truly speechless and ended up sitting down and watching them for quite some time.
The friend I was with had a nice camera and said she got some good shots, so hopefully when she sends them my way I can share them. I have never seen this many goats in my entire life, let alone all in one place.
The numerous droppings confirmed their presence, but as I climbed closer to approach them, they ran off—not a good sign, in my opinion.
Maybe this area is known goat territory to most, but if not, I figured I’d bring it to your attention.
Safe Trails,
Chase
