Kealaloloa Ridge

 Kealaloloa Ridge

I was looking up info on Lahaina, which I visited several times in the 1980s. I remember going into a Chinese community hall built in the 19th century, which had Chinese writing all over (it was burnt to the ground). I also remember climbing the Kealaloloa Ridge nearby, around 1985. I was thinking of reaching the Iao Needle on this ridge from the south shore.

I did not record this hike in my database, nor did I write anything on the internet (which was in its infancy). I was, however, quite surprised to see this post on OHE, dated 7/1/1997. I had woken up at 5 a.m. to watch TV coverage of the handover of Hong Kong.

Gaby Canalizo wrote about this hike, and I even chimed in, confirming that I did go on this hike. I remember the terrain was like Kamaileunu or Keaau, but the pictures on the internet show it as a gentle jeep road. The grass, however, looks as if it would be ready to burn at any moment!
