30th Anniversary

30th Anniversary

I planned to hike on July 24, 30th anniversary of my first hike with HTMC, Schofield-Waikane led by John Hall, but forgot.  The nearest date was Sun. July 22.

We can now do things quite unimaginable on July 24, 1982:  we can e-mail text, and we can even e-mail pictures.  So I include a few pictures to remember my 30th anniversary with.

We tried to do #5 in Aina Haina Ewa.  This is the one I tried numerous times and could not quite connect top to bottom.  At the same place where we turn right to go down the valley to go up Wailupe Middle Ridge, or the 1-2-3 switchbacks, look left and there are ribbons  leading the way.

However, we were led astray by a newly renovated trail, that appears to cross and connect the ridges (i.e. go in the same direction as the jeep road, or the stream).  We explored and found a man-made bridge, not very old, at the dry stream between #5 and #6.

So we went across to #6 and ascended that one instead.  Feldman claims he went up all the way to the top two years ago, using the rope we placed back in 2003.  So we went up to that familiar rope, and even fixed its bottom to some sturdy tree.

We came down and found another variation of the trail that crosses ridges.  It appears to go towards #4 as well.  Then it comes out at the jeep road at some nondescript spot that I of course marked with ribbons (no matter how many ribbons I put, if it's a nondescript place, ribbons get torn down and the opening disappears after a while).

Fun day at almost 30th.
